A man of meager possessions, he left behind a legacy of his work and deeds.Ī quote of his which I thoroughly admire is: Called the ‘People’s President’, he died at the age of 83 whilst delivering a lecture at IIM, Shillong after a cardiac arrest. His role in test firing the Pokhran nuclear tests is remembered till date. His autobiographical book ‘WINGS OF FIRE’ which he has co-authored along with Arun Tiwari takes us across his life’s journey from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, his modest beginning to becoming India’s most loved and respected man. A ‘Bharat Ratna’, India’s highest civilian honour awardee even before he became president, he returned to writing and teaching after his term as president. An aerospace engineer, who worked as a scientist at the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), he is also referred to as ‘Missile Man of India’. I started following his journey much before he was our president in 2002.
